The Hastings Pak n Save Netball Centre, incorporating 18 courts, is on track for a June opening when it will host 2000 netballers in its first round of Saturday netball. An official opening is planned for the day.

“We’re really excited by the move,” says Hastings Netball Centre Chairperson Heidi Oliver.  “The building alongside the courts is brand new and we will have six more courts than we had at the old facility.  From what we have been told, there is better parking, great on-site catering and the players will really notice the increased space between the courts, which should also make for a better spectator experience,” says Mrs Oliver.

David Smith of chief sponsor Pak n Save said seeing the project come to fruition gave the company an enormous sense of pride. “We’re really happy that we can play a part in developing a facility that will benefit so many netballers. Many of them shop with Pak n Save so we’re happy to support the game in Hawke’s Bay,” he says.

The courts are due to be finished in May and opening day is planned for 11 June. “We want a few weeks to iron out any teething problems before the official move,” says Mrs Oliver.

Sports Park Trust chair Lawrence Yule said the courts would be worth the wait. “We initially wanted to have them available last year but it was just getting to tight. It’s a great facility and will increase the region’s chances of hosting tournaments,” he said.

The building which sits alongside the courts was shifted on-site in February. Over the next two months floodlights will be installed, the final surface laid and fencing erected around the perimeter of the courts.
