Grandstand all go!

Work can now get underway on the construction of a new grandstand at the Regional Sports Park following the granting of a resource consent today.

"This is just great" said spokesperson Ian Smith. "The supporters' club had a fantastic launch event at the end last month and to get this approval so soon after that is great news."

"The grandstand has a real wow factor. It puts Hawke's Bay on the athletics map like never before and is going to be a magnet for all sorts of events. It's something the Bay can be proud of."

Mr Smith said he hoped the decision, which had been made by an independent commissioner, would silence the critics.

"The fact is the public referendum supported the move of athletics facilities to the new site but despite that a few individuals have held it up in the courts. The grandstand should have been ready for the start of next athletics season but now won't be, because of the actions of those few. The process is far too PC in my view," he says.
