Hawke's Bay has always been at the forefront of athletic facilities and the new venue continues that theme. The track is both a community facility and one that attracts considerable outside interest and economic benefit for the region.
The new track, opened by Olympic 1500 metre silver medalist Nick Willis, is one of only three class II tracks in New Zealand (you can break a world record there) and arguably the fastest in the country. Each week during the season it is used by hundreds, sometimes thousands, of athletes including regular attendances of 300-500 at the weekly ‘club nights'.
The 2500 seat grandstand was opened by Deputy Prime Minister Bill English in November 2010. Since then the Park has hosted the New Zealand Secondary School Championships and the Colgate Games. These two events attracted 5000 athletes and spectators, injecting $2.5m into the region.
