In 2003 there were 4000 footballers in the region. Today there are 6000 and by 2021 there are predicted to be 9000 players. The sport is growing strongly and the eight additional fields at the sports park accommodate that growth. Half of the fields will be floodlit and one will be an all-weather surface enabling it to be used for intensive training.
The football fields ‘accommodate' three sports - football in winter, touch in summer and providing the additional fields at the Park frees up Akina Park in Hastings for dedicated softball use.
Central Football, one of seven national federations and responsible for managing the game for the central North Island, will re-locate to the Park's central building
The cycling velodrome can also host the fast growing indoor version of the game - Futsal
