Hawke's Bay is a popular destination for cycling and the Ramblers Cycling Club is the second largest in New Zealand. The region is popular because it has an excellent variety of terrain and low traffic volumes. As a consequence it attracts significant out-of-region interest. However there is no velodrome in Hawke's Bay and indeed no covered velodrome in the North Island.
The venue will be a magnet for serious cyclists from all over the North Island and will attract competitive national and international events. But it will also be a community facility. Learn to ride, safety, and early track racing will be enjoyed by thousands of school age children each year. Experience from the country's only other velodrome, Invercargill, also points to the track being used for business house competitions and among the elderly (on the inner track) who appreciate the all-weather benefits it offers.
