Hawke's Bay has always been at the forefront of athletic facilities and the new venue continues that theme. The track is both a community facility and, like cycling, one that will attract considerable outside interest and economic benefit for the region.

The new track, opened by Olympic 1500 metre silver medalist Nick Willis, is one of only three class II tracks in New Zealand (you can break a world record there) and arguably the fastest in the country. Each week, during the season, it is used by hundreds, sometimes thousands, of athletes including regular attendances of 300-500 at the weekly ‘club nights'.

In June 2010 the 2500 seat grandstand will be complete. Later that year the region will be host to the New Zealand secondary school athletic champs and a month later the Colgate Games. Both events will bring thousands of athletes and spectators to the region.
