The Sports Park is arguably the most significant and beneficial project Hawke's Bay has ever undertaken. It is unlike anything else in New Zealand and potentially provides a blueprint for future sport and recreation in this country.
The 30 hectare Park will have outstanding facilities. A world class athletics track - you can break a world record there - has been laid. Construction of a grandstand to go alongside the track has commenced and when all stages are complete the Park will cater for athletics, tennis, netball, football, gymsports, cycling (the North Island's only indoor velodrome) and a whole lot more.
But this isn't just about smart facilities. The Park is different because its main goal is to improve the health and wellbeing of its users. The link between engagement in sport and improved health and social outcomes is well documented. The Park's management will have programmes designed to benefit all sectors of our society from toddlers to the elderly and from at risk youth to high performance athletes.
The Sports Park story began in 1921 and will culminate in 2010 with a world class athletics track, grandstand and other outstanding sport and recreation facilities.
